The Karenga District Security Committee has suspended the declaration of the recently concluded National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primary results due to violent protests.

The decision was agreed upon during a meeting between the District Security Committee and the candidates held on Sunday July 20, 2025, following the violence that broke out on Saturday at the tally center.

On Saturday, July 18, 2025, at a round 6:00AM, a group of voters stormed the Women’s Community Hall, located at the district headquarters, where voting tallying was done, protesting delayed declaration of the NRM primary results.

The angry voters accused the Karenga NRM Registrar Lux Patrick Llochiyo for canceling results from the sub-counties of Kakwanga and Lobalangit over alleged irregularities.

They overran security guarding the tally center and took DPC ASP Simon Bataire hostage for hours.

Lux Patrick Llochiyo, the District Registrar and a senior NRM Commissioner were also put on duress to declare the result, which they declined.

In response to the deteriorating situation, the military was deployed to the tally center and around town to restore order and ensure the safety of all the parties involved.

On Sunday, July 20, 2025, the Karenga RDC, Filbert Ocailap, convened a meeting with all the candidates and other stakeholders, where it was resolved to refer the declaration of results to the NRM Electoral Commission pending thorough investigations into alleged irregularities.
