At least eight people have been confirmed dead and scores critically injured in Tuesday, April 7, 2026, an early morning road crash involving a passenger bus and a box body truck along the Masaka-Mbarara Highway.

Twaha Kasirye, the Southern Region Police spokesperson said the crash occurred at 1:00am at Kalengo village in Lwengo District.

Kasirye revealed that a speeding box body truck, Reg. No. UBH 013Q, en route to Mbarara City from Masaka City, rammed into the rear of a passenger bus with Reg.No. UAL492L, heading to Rukungiri district.

The two vehicles reportedly rolled several times after the crash killing eight people on the spot.

By the time of filling this story, the police had only managed to identify one of the deceased as Ernest Abaho, an officer attached to Mukono Central Police Station while others had no identification documents.

Kasirye said that police could not identify other victims since most of them had no identification documents, calling on the relatives to come forward to help identify and claim the bodies.

The latest crash brings the death toll from road crashes in the grater Masaka region to at least 12 in three days, following earlier incidents in Kalungu and Lyantonde Districts on April 4 and 5.
