Kotido Municipality Town Clerk, Emmanuel Okaja, has stated that the Ministry of Local Government is currently in the process of sourcing a contractor to undertake the construction of the long-awaited Shs23 billion Kotido Main Market.

Initially, the construction was scheduled to begin in 2022 under the Markets Agricultural Trade Improvement (MATIP) with funding from the African Development Bank.

However, the process was halted in the same for review before the actual construction could start. This delay has caused frustration among the public, with many demanding explanations for the hold-up.

In a recent interview, Emmanuel Okaja told this website that the process of sourcing for contractor is ongoing and construction will begin as soon as it is completed.

He further explained that the municipal council has already identified a site to relocate the vendors currently operating in the market, in order to pave way for the construction of the long-awaited modern market.

The successful markets constructed under the Marketing Agricultural Trade Improvement Program (MATIP) include Moroto, Soroti, Gulu, Lira, Mbale, Tororo, Jinja, Mbarara, Busia, Kasese, Kabale, Entebbe Lugazi, and Kitoro.
