President Yoweri Museveni has directed Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba to release former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among from house arrest, potentially ending months of restrictions imposed as authorities investigated allegations surrounding the management of Parliament.
In a post on his official X account on Tuesday, Gen. Muhoozi said: “Mzee has also instructed me to release AAA from house arrest. We shall do that as well.” The initials “AAA” are commonly used to refer to Anita Annet Among.
The announcement comes more than three months after security agencies reportedly placed Among under house arrest following a raid on her residences in May 2026.
Among, the Bukedea District Woman MP and former Speaker of the 11th Parliament, came under investigation over allegations including corruption, abuse of office and illicit enrichment.
Security agencies searched several of her residences in Kampala, Wakiso and other parts of the country, with investigators reporting the recovery of cash, vehicles, documents and other items that were to form part of investigations.
The former Speaker’s detention at home was widely reported following the May 16 security operation at her Nakasero residence.
Media reported at the time that a joint security force had stormed her home and that the operation was later extended to some of her other residences.
The investigations also triggered her withdrawal from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament.
Among subsequently remained largely out of public view, although she made her first virtual appearance in Parliament on August 4, after an 83-day absence.
Parliament officials said legislators are permitted to attend proceedings remotely under the House rules.
The announcement of her release therefore marks a significant development in a saga that has involved one of the country’s most powerful political figures.
Background to the house arrest
Among’s troubles emerged shortly after she took the oath as a member of the 12th Parliament.
Security agencies launched investigations into allegations of illicit wealth accumulation, money laundering and abuse of office during her tenure as Speaker.
The searches of her properties reportedly resulted in the recovery of large amounts of cash in local and foreign currencies, luxury vehicles, electronic devices, financial documents and land titles. Investigators said the items would be examined as potential evidence in the ongoing inquiries.
Her case also attracted political attention after a number of leaders from the Teso sub-region appealed to President Museveni to forgive her and allow her greater freedom, citing concerns about her welfare.
Media reported in July that Among had remained under house arrest pending completion of investigations.
Gen. Muhoozi has been a prominent figure in the developments surrounding Among.
His public criticism of the former Speaker preceded the security action against her, while analysts have linked the episode to the CDF’s increasingly visible role in Uganda’s political affairs.
The latest announcement, however, does not immediately clarify whether the investigations against Among have been concluded or whether she will face any criminal charges.
It also remains to be seen whether her release will be accompanied by further directives concerning the investigations and property recovered during the security operations.
