Grief has engulfed the residents of Napoong village, Lokitelaebu Town Council in Kotido district following the gruesome murder of a 32-year-old man.

The deceased identified as Longola Nakuny was shot dead by the suspected Karamoja cattle rustlers on on Tuesday July 8, 2025, at around 9:00 PM.

Hussein Ssekalema, the Kotido District Police Commander confirms the tragic incident saying, the attackers ambushed Longola just a few meters away from his home.

He said that Longola was seen at the UPDF detachment in Lokitelaebu on the fateful day, which prompted the armed cattle rustlers to kill him on suspicion of divulging their secrets to the security forces.

According to Ssekalema, Longola’s lifeless body was taken to Kotido General Hospital for a postmortem as investigations into his gruesome murder progress.

John Magezi Lukooki, the Kotido Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) has condemned the killing, describing it as senseless act of criminality.

He urged the security forces to pursue the matter and ensure that the culprits are brought to book.

Lukooki further cautioned the youths against engaging in criminal acts and urged the community to volunteer the information regarding the whereabouts of Longola’s killers to the security agencies.

Longola’s killing comes barely two months after a UPDF soldier, Lance Corporal Francis Ilukol Lowak was killed by a group of armed cattle rustlers.

Ilukol who was attached to the 57th Battalion under the 409 Brigade based in Arua was murdered on May 26, 2025, at around 11:00 PM in Kanalobae East, Kanalobae Parish, Maarus Sub County, Kotido district.

These incidents highlight the ongoing security challenges faced by communities in the Karamoja Sub-region due to cattle rustling and attacks by the armed Karamojongs.
