Police in Amudat district, have suspended the operations of Evergreen Resource Company LTD, following the death of a second casual worker, in a space of only two days.

The latest incident involved Tibita John, Musoga by tribe, resident of Cheptakol village, Lokaales Sub County, Amudat District, who died on Wednesday morning while on duty.

On Monday this week, Baker Magomu, aged 30, a casual worker, attached to the same company, was killed by a conveyor machine.

Preliminary police reports indicate that Tibita, was on a lift coming out of the mining tunnel when a broken falling stone descending downwards cut the wires of the lift forcing the deceased to fall 50 meters down the tunnel. He was reportedly retrieved unconscious and rushed to Karita Health Centre IV but pronounced dead upon arrival.

Michael Longole, the Mt Moroto regional police spokesperson, says the Regional Police Commander, Mt. Moroto and team of detectives rushed to the scene and recorded statements from eye witnesses. Longole says the body of deceased body was taken to Mbale City mortuary for postmortem and inquiries have commenced.

Longole, says that after the incident, Police held a crisis meeting with the management of Evergreen Resource Company LTD, and advised the company to suspend their activities for at least ten days to allow the company put in place safety measures to guarantee the safety of workers.
