The Kotido Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Charles Ichogor, has directed police and army commanders to heighten security to deal with acts of hooliganism and violence during the ongoing NRM party primary campaigns and the 2026 general elections.
The NRM candidates for the positions of MP, Mayors, LCV chairpersons, and councilors began their two-week campaigns on July 2, in preparation for the party primary election scheduled for July 17, this year.
Since the start of the NRM primaries, several violent incidents and cases of hooliganism have been reported in Kotido, including instances of knife-wielding men ambushing people at night and probing their property.
With the political atmosphere heating up as the country prepares for NRM primaries and the 2026 general elections, Ichogor, urges all the stakeholders in the election process to desist from conflating politics and hooliganism.
He warned that those caught on the wrong side of the law will be handled with an iron hand.
In response to the RDC’s directive, Lt. Col. Emmanuel Kafureka the 43rd Battalion Commander, assured that the army has the necessary manpower to ensure peaceful NRM party primary and the 2026 general elections.
According to Lt. Kafureka, the army and other sister agencies will not tolerate acts of violence and hooliganism by political actors.
According to the 2021 security intelligence ranking, Kotido is ranked as the second most violent district in Uganda, after Sembabule.
The ranking was based on the level of hooliganism that tainted the entire campaign process, leaving some people dead and others severely injured.
