The regional police commander Kidepo SSP Godfrey Achiria has challenged parents in Karamoja to step up responsibility towards the education their children if the region is to eliminate cattle rustling.
Karamoja region has over the years witnessed endless and recuring cattle raids which have undermined development due to insecurity.
Speaking to congregants during Sunday mass animated by police officers at the good shepherd cathedral, Achiria observed that most children of school going age are either in kraals or engaged in domestic chores.
Achiria challenged parents in the region to take responsibility of their children and ensure that they receive education to cut the raiding culture.
Kotido district and Karamoja region as a whole have struggled to ensure that children of school going age are kept out of the kraals and domestic work.
In November 2028, the Attorney General approved the Kotido District Education Ordinance, which seeks to boost enrollment and retention of children in primary schools.
According to the ordinance, local leaders are supposed to mobilize children of school going age to attend school. They are also required to ensure that children within their areas are not subjected to paid labour or any income generating activities during school hours.
This has however, remained silent even after the district tried to popularize the ordinance a few years ago.
