Youth leaders in the Karamoja Sub-region have outlined eight key issues affecting them, calling for urgent government intervention ahead of the International Youth Day Celebrations slated for August 12, 2025.
Among them are unemployment, corruption, climate change, limited resources, poverty, insecurity, limited access to quality education, and gender inequality.
These issues were raised on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, during the Karamoja Youth Parliament organized by Restless Development Uganda in collaboration with Karamoja Youth Efforts To Save Environment (KAYESE) and Media Challenge Initiative, with support from the embassies of Denmark, Ireland, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and Sweden.
The event, themed “Bringing the Youth Voices to the Table of Decision Making,” brought together youth leaders from the nine districts of the Karamoja sub-region to deliberate on the issues affecting them.
Gady Epitu, the Moroto Youth Chairperson who also serves as secretary publicity at the National Youth Council, expressed frustration over the limited funding available for youth programs and initiatives.
He explained that despite being the future leaders, innovators, and change-makers, the youth are constantly hindered by a lack of funding for programs that could help them develop their skills and contribute positively to the community.
Judith Lokwakol, a resident of Napak District and a girl champion from Restless Development Uganda, emphasized the importance of including youth in the decision-making process at all levels and equipping them with hands-on skills to address the issue of unemployment.
The Programs Manager of Restless Development Uganda, Timothy Oboth, stated that these issues will be presented to the National Youth Parliament scheduled for August 8, 2025, for discussion.
