Hundreds of learners at Kakore Primary School Nakitoit South village in Karenga sub-county, Karenga district can now have safe and clean water following the commissioning of the hand pump borehole, an intervention by World Vision.
The new water source is set to provide clean water to over 300 learners, teachers and neighboring residents, directly addressing the severe water challenges that have long plagued school enrollment and attendance in the area.
Constantine Okang, the Head teacher of Kakore Primary School, said that the learners, teachers and the neighbouring community have for the past years been grappling with access to clean safe water.
He explained that many pupils, particularly girls, had to spend their mornings searching for water for household chores before coming to school, leading to chronic absenteeism and high dropout rates.
Okang is confident that the newly commissioned borehole will create ample time for learning since pupils have been taking a long time to access water.
Innocent Owino, the manager of World Vision’s Lobalangit program area in Karenga district, said that the borehole’s construction, carried out by Icon Project Limited, began in April 2025 and cost 29,016,200 shillings.
This figure included a comprehensive hydrological survey and other tests to guarantee the water’s safety for drinking and its compliance with food quality standards.
Ronald Kedi, the Deputy RDC, and Anthony Egesa, the Deputy CAO of Karenga district, pledged close collaboration between Karenga district water authorities and the local community to ensure the borehole’s proper maintenance.
Felix Lochale, the LC 5 chairperson of Karenga district, called upon other stakeholders to follow World Vision’s lead in enhancing sanitation and hygiene, referencing their previous successes in constructing sanitary facilities at Lokori Napore, Pire, and Kangole primary schools.
