The Ministry of Finance has allocated Kotido district an additional wage bill of Shs1.1 billion for the recruitment of more health workers this financial year.
This is part of a broader government’s plan to address staffing shortages in the health sector in order to improve health service delivery in particularly in rural areas.
Donato Oola, the Kotido Chief Administrative Officer, said the new wage will cover the recruitment of enrolled nurses, enrolled midwives and other health professionals.
According to him, the district’s technical team is currently identifying the most crucial positions to be filled with this wage.
Oola explained that additional health workers once recruited health workers will be deployed in health center IIIs and IVs across the district to bridge the gap in the delivery of health services
The Shs1.1 billion wage allocation comes barely two months after the district successfully hired over 86 health workers and civil servants in May, this year.
A majority of the recently recruited health workers were deployed to Kotido General Hospital, which has helped boost the staffing level to 46 percent up from the initial 14 percent.
With the overall staffing level standing at over 56 percent, Oola is optimistic that the government will allocate a supplementary budget to recruit other vital staff, particularly department heads.
