The Kotido District Senior Health Inspector, Tonny Achuma courts communities to exercise extra caution when buying food items in the open markets for their own safety.
This comes in the wake of cassava poisoning report that left a minor dead in July last year at Lokitelaebu Town Council.
The report, its results were only shared this week after a follow- up story by Etoil A Karamoja indicates that the cassava had a poisonous chemical, cyanide.
Cyanide poisoning can be fatal if not properly detoxified by soaking, drying, and scraping cassava before being consumed.
Now, Achuma has emphasized the importance of vigilance when purchasing and consuming food.
To combat the issue, Achuma says communities should among others observe proper handling and storage of food, avoid buying rotten food items and swiftly report suspected cases of food poisoning as soon as it is detected.
