Grief on Tuesday May 13, 2025, engulfed the residents of Apeded village, Namalu Sub County in Nakapiripirit district after a body of a 75-year-old woman identified as Alice Nakee, was recovered floating on the river within the area by the police.
Nakee is suspected to have been strangled by yet to be identified people who later dumped her in the river.
She went missing on the May 10 2025, following alleged dispute with her neighbour over land boundary marks.
AIP Michael Longole, the Mt. Morot/ASTU Regional Police Spokesperson, in a released statement, said preliminary investigations suggest that the dispute may have contributed to Alice’s disappearance and subsequent death.
A postmortem examination revealed that the cause of death was suffocation secondary to drowning in water.
Longole says the police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Nakee’s death and have urged anyone with information to come volunteer it the police.
The case highlights the growing concerns over land disputes in the region, which have often led to violent clashes.
During a community security baraza held at Napumpum sub-county in Kotido district last month, Francis Chemusto, the Karamoja Regional ASTU Commander, called for local leaders’ intervention in addressing rising cases of land conflicts.
Chemusto warned that if the situation is not addressed urgently, many lives could be lost.
