The Bishop of Kotido Catholic Diocese Rev. Domenic Eibu, has underscored the need for media practitioners in the Karamoja sub-region to be frontliners in peacebuilding through reportage that promotes understanding and reduce tension in the already fragile region.

He said that media practitioners should report authentic, factual and appropriate messages for peacebuilding and mitigating conflicts in the region and the entire country.

Bishop Eibu made the statement on Sunday at Good Shepherd Cathedral while leading a mass to mark the World Social Communications Day, held under the theme “Share with gentleness the hope that is in your hearts”.

In his sermon, Bishop Eibu urged them to seek and report the truth by avoiding misinformation, propaganda and ensuring they do not broadcast inaccuracies.

He appreciated the media for their efforts in informing the public and urged them to ensure that their reports promote peace rather than fueling the conflict.

“Hate speech is dangerous, media is trusted to inform the public and MUST avoid hate speech” Bishop Eibu said.

With the elections approaching, the prelate called on the Journalists to be extra careful, asserting that there will be more hate speeches and inflammatory remarks.

“In conflict sensitive Reporting, we should know the importance of the ‘Truth’ and today I want to tell you the Journalists to seek the Truth and report it without fear or Favor because it is only the truth that sets you free and it will help the people to make an informed decision.” Rev. Eibu said.

According to bishop Eibu, peace Journalism goes beyond sensational reporting and provide a critical understanding of complex conflicts, including bringing the voices of marginalized groups.

He added that it’s the role of journalists to investigate the issues and also go down to the people at the grassroots. Report what they say and bring their voices to the spotlight.

The citizens also need to be heard and their voices need to be brought to the media” he remarked.
